Memory-Tech Installs Optical Disk System with Security Feature for Softbank BB to
Archive Access Log of Employees'PCs
Memory-Tech Corporation
Memory-Tech Corporation (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Shiroharu Kawasaki) recently installed a product named "StarchiveTM", archive system that employs the blue laser high-Capacity disk UDO*, for Softbank BB Corp. (Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo, President: Masayoshi Son), a company that provides Yahoo! BB broadband service.
The archive system has the Capacity of 4.8 terabytes and employs unfalsifiable write-once media. It is used to archive the log of the company's server including operation logs of employees' PCs. For the purpose of monitoring any fraudulent PC operations, Softbank BB will collect the operation logs and archive the data semipermanently. Since the archived data is encrypted using MISTY, which is world-leading encryption technology developed by Mitsubishi Electric Information Systems, it is impossible to read out the data in case the media was taken out of the company.
Memory-Tech aims to expand the sales of StarchiveTM that takes advantage of the optical disk's attribute of preventing falsification for the long-term storage of digital data. Memory-Tech has already installed the system for major companies such as NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation), NRI Data Services and Avex Group Holdings and is steadily increasing the number of system installation.
The features of the product and the system chart of Softbank BB's installed system are as follows:

1. What is StarchiveTM?

It is a system that consists of a changer robot, which employs the blue laser high-Capacity disk UDO (Ultra Density Optical), and software, which includes virtual volume feature that is composed of several disks and "HSM" (Hierarchical Storage Management) feature that makes the transition of data from hard disk to optical disk according to the frequency of usage. The Generation 1 media has the Capacity of 30GB. The Capacity will expand to 60GB with Generation 2 in 2006 and 120GB with Generation 3 in 2008.

The features of UDO include: (a) long-term storage, (b) high-Capacity and high-speed and (c) security feature as explained below.

a. Long-term storage:

The magnetic tape cannot handle long-term storage of data of several years due to the contact type reading, which causes drive head wear and media deterioration. On the contrary, UDO offers contact-free reading and media's physical stability that allow long-term storage of more than 50 years. The media is stored in hard cartridge, which physically protects data. Additionally, the cartridge's double-sided separate shutters provide the full prevention measure against dust that interferes with reading and writing data.

b. High-Capacity and high-speed:

The UDO media of StarchiveTM has the Capacity of 30GB, which is three times larger than current DVD media. Loading the media in the changer can expand the storage Capacity to 100 terabytes. StarchiveTM has achieved the high-speed R/W time equivalent to that of hard disk or reading speed of 8MB per second and data access speed of 25ms. The quick data recovery in a time of disaster is possible as well as fast data search.

c. Security feature:

TrueWORM, unfalsifiable write once, read many media, is also provided. It meets SEC17a-C, the Standard of Falsification Prevention of Data of Security and Exchange Commission (SEC). The data is encrypted by Mitsubishi Electric's MISTY, which prevents the important data from leaking outside the company.

* UDO:

The high-Capacity optical disk used for StarchiveTM employs UDO (Ultra Density Optical) specification, which is specialized in optical disk for business use. The specification is already approved by ECMA (European Computer Manufacturers Association) and also approved as ISO specification. Hewlett-Packard has already employed the UDO optical disk as standard. In Japan, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media is starting the production and sales of UDO disk this month.
